Butterflies as Spirit Guides

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”

When I was a little girl I was always fascinated by butterflies and birds. I could watch them for hours and imagine what my life would be like if I had wings. What would life be like if I could rise up above my problems and just fly away? Sometimes we look at butterflies and we marvel at just how beautiful they are and how effortlessly they fly.  But the beauty of the butterfly’s journey is that it is anything but effortless. It is FULL of effort.

The butterfly begins it’s life as low down to the ground as it possibly can. It begins as a lowly (and sometimes ugly) caterpillar. The caterpillar, so misunderstood, so disrespected by the rest of the insect world. Look upon as just a squishy imbecile. And so this caterpillar winds itself into a cocoon – a dark, cramped, scary place – fills himself with faith and waits, all the while not knowing how he will emerge.

Butterflies have been my spirit guides for many years. They often come to me when I am in my darkest places, they come when I am facing the unknown, when I feel unsure. Butterflies are symbolic of transformation, rising above adversities, and our divine connection to the spirit world. Butterflies come in so many shapes and sizes. Each one with a beautiful message to share. They can also be a sign from a departed loved one who has crossed over to the spirit realm. When you see the same type of butterfly over and over when you recently lost a loved one, this is your loved one dropping in to let you know they are safe and checking in with you.

The caterpillar may enter the cocoon full of fear, but it must have faith in knowing that this cocoon – this dark space – is actually part of it’s spiritual and physical growth. When the right time comes, the caterpillar emerges from the cocoon as a beautiful butterfly with big, bright wings. It doesn’t hesitate to jump out, knowing it now has wings to fly. It has allowed itself to be completely transformed by faith.

If you are in your cocoon right now, embrace it! This darkness will only make you stronger, this darkness is just a part of your evolution. And you can get out. You will rise above. You will one day fly.
