Detox Day 1: Casting Shadows

Current Mood: Fatigue

There is a Maori proverb that states, “turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.” This week I am turning toward the sun, I am leaving those shadows behind and embarking on a journey into me.

For years I have read about the benefits on doing a “cleanse”, “detox”, “raw food diet” but I never thought I had it in me. That all changed when I got diagnosed with PCOS. Since I know my diet is going to have to dramatically change, I wondered, why not give it a little jump start?

So here I at the end of day one lying in bed with a case of the shakes. Am I really that addicted to carbs, sugar, greasy, sticky stuff? Apparently so.

Well I didn’t make it easy on myself. At the last minute I decided to do a yoga work out and then take a ridiculously hot bath. Hello blood sugar level plummet. Woot. I haven’t felt this way in a long time. But at least now I know what to and not do during the week.

I woke up this morning (after a glorious binge fest thanks to superbowl 2011 or as I like to call it lamebowl 2011) and have 2 glasses of water and a pear. Oooh pears. How I love to hate you.

So my stomach then starts doing sons cartwheels and I feel generally uncomfortable.

I should have had a mid morning snack but I got caught up working on an article.

By lunch I was starving. I followed the detox guide and made boiled veggies and brown rice. For dessert I had a cantaloupe.

Lunch: Boiled veggies, cilantro, ginger, rice and sweet cantaloupe.

Mid way through the afternoon I had some pomogranate, some mixed nuts and lots of water.

For some reason I didn’t seem to miss the caffeine as much as I thought I would.

By dinner time I was starving. Rob and I had a baked potato, a salad with spring greens and ripe tomatoes and dessert of the best mango I have ever had in my life!

We had some more cantaloupe (it was going bad) and then some more nuts for energy.

By about 9 p.m. I was incredibly tired. I stayed up a little later but finally passed out and drifted into some deep, deep sleep.

A great start and I am ready for more.

I’m tired of these shadows bringing me down.
