How to Remove Negative Energy From Your Home

by | Dec 4, 2017

Several years ago I discovered the power of removing negative energy from my home.

At the time, I was living in a haunted house and every day I was subjected to taunting and hostile negative spirits. It was a nightmare! I started doing online research to try to figure out how to cleanse the energy in my home and remove the negative. Through the power of the Internet (and a little bit of trial and error) I came up with a system that works for me and I want to share this divine guidance with you – my loving, soulful reader.

But first, you may be asking, “why should I care about removing negative energy in my home?” Negative energy doesn’t just show up in the form of spirits. Negative energy can show up in your home in the form of clutter, other people’s energy that you have invited into your home, old stagnant feelings that haven’t been let go, and even anger or fights you have had in your space. For this reason I believe it is important – regardless to whether you feel the negative energy or not – to cleanse the energy in your home at least once every few months.

Similarly to spring cleaning and energetic clearing of your home can help you:

  • Feel more connected, safe, and excited to be in your home.
  • Spark the creative energy in you and let go of the stagnation.
  • Create a better space for romantic energy in your life.
  • Bring your family (or members of the household) closer together.
  • Inspire you to maintain sacred space in your home.

Whenever I cleanse my space I feel so inspired and in alignment with spirit! Here are five ways I remove negative energy from my home, and you can too:

Let Some Fresh Air In

The first step is to open the windows or open the door and just let some fresh air into your home. I also noticed that sometimes we live with the blinds closed. Think about how in life, things always start turning around when you can see the light. Open the blinds, let the sunshine in and make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee and sit in the light.

Set the Right Intention

Everything done with intention comes from the right space in your heart. When you set about clearing your home, start by sitting in silence and thinking about your intention for this space. How do I want this space to make me feel? Why am I choosing to clear this space? What emotion or feeling will I get when I clear this space? And how can I make this space an accurate representation of my internal space?

As you set the intention, you can write it down for added clarity. I like to keep all my deep thoughts and feelings in an Angel Journal that I refer to later in the year. It’s always a great treat to look back and see what I was doing and how I was feeling years ago.

Consider Sage, Incense or Palo Santo

One of my favorite purchase (like literally ever) was a bundle of white California sage from a hippie store in Fort Lauderdale. I knew as soon as I held it in my hand that I needed that bundle. My husband is also a huge fan of sage so we currently have so many different types of sage including dragons blood sage, black sage, and the best of the best the organic white California sage. When you use sage, realize that it is a very sacred and special plant. You can grow sage yourself, shop locally, or buy it online from a reputable dealer. I particularly like sage floral bundles that come with lavender or rose petals. They smell so good!

Another great option is to get incense like rose incense or Nag Champa. Or you can get another tried and tested negativity-remover, Palo Santo. Used by many for it’s energetic healing, Palo Santo is “a mystical tree that grows on the coast of South America and is related to Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal.  In Spanish, the name literally means “Holy Wood”.  It is part of the citrus family and has sweet notes of pine, mint and lemon.”

How to use it:

Burn the incense, sage, or Palo Santo and hold the stick in your hand. Walk from the back of your house and stop in every corner of every room. As you move through each room, say a prayer into the corner of the room to bless this house and only allow positive energy to dwell in this space. Ask that any negative, unwanted, or stagnant energy be removed from the house today and for always. Feel the difference in the house and in your heart as you move from room to room.

Gather the Joyful

I read a book that truly changed the way I feel about tidying up and cleaning and that is “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. In the book she writes, “The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one’s hand and ask: “Does this spark joy?” If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it. This is not only the simplest but also the most accurate yardstick by which to judge.” I love this because as we surround ourselves with joyful things, we attract more joy into our lives. When you clear your space, be sure to put things around you that bring you joy. For me that is my crystals, my Angel cards, my books, and pictures of my loved ones. You can find these in many different parts of my house. When you look around your home right now, are you surrounded by things that bring you joy? Things that make you feel comfortable or at home? Or is it time to gather the joyful things and bring them near?

Make It a Ritual

Now that you know how to create this space-clearing ritual in your home to remove negative energy, you must continue to do it over and over. For practice is really what makes anything a ritual! I would say more, but I believe Elizabeth Gilbert said it best in Eat, Pray, Love, “This is what rituals are for. We do spiritual ceremonies as human beings in order to create a safe resting place for our most complicated feelings of joy or trauma, so that we don’t have to haul those feelings around with us forever, weighing us down. We all need such places of ritual safekeeping. And I do believe that if your culture or tradition doesn’t have the specific ritual you are craving, then you are absolutely permitted to make up a ceremony of your own devising, fixing your own broken-down emotional systems with all the do-it-yourself resourcefulness of a generous plumber/poet.”

Thank you for the beautiful tips, and I so agree about opening blinds, windows and letting that wonderful Florida air come in. Also having green plants at home helps for me to feel calmer, hence better energy. Please can you tell me where in Fort Lauderdale do I get the sage you are mentioning in your post ?Thank you!

Thank you Viktoria! I got my sage from California but there is a small shop in Fort Lauderdale off Oakland Park We Be Joys that sells it.
