Kindess: Pass it On

by | Aug 8, 2011

The last time I was in California I met a woman who gave me a coin.

She worked with my mother and it was the first time I had met her, but we instantly bonded. She told me of her travels around the world and her spiritual journey. She spoke of yoga and her faith in love and marriage. I told her about Kenya about the animals I had seen on Safari, she told me about the time she got married outside a Buddhist temple. We laughed together and shared more stories and then, just as I was about to leave, she told me she had something for me.

Reaching in her purse she handed me a big, golden coin. “Take this,” she said.

Pass it on

On the coin were the words “Kindness. Pass it on.”

“It’s not much,” she said. “But I know you’ll know what to do with it.”

As I left my mom’s office and we went about the rest of the day I kept thinking of that coin and of the woman I would probably never see again.

Sometimes I think people flutter into your life like butterflies: brilliant and beautiful and at just the right moment.

Remember that you are one of those butterflies. Sometimes you are in the right place at the right time for someone. They might be having the worst of days, their car might have just broken down, or they might just need a hug. Whatever it may be, don’t be afraid to show some kindness. The more kindness you show, the more it comes back to you.

I still have that coin, somewhere at the bottom of my never-ending purse.

And every once in a while that coin crosses my mind.

Perhaps I should pass it on.
